HONEY ISLAND, WHERE EVERYDAY, EVERY CHILD SUCCEEDS

Dear Honey Island Elementary Families,

It is always so exciting to begin a new school year!  I hope that each of you has had a fun and relaxing summer, spending time with family and friends.  I’m sure every child will be ready to learn once they walk through our doors! 

This year at Honey Island, we will be celebrating our theme “A Sea of Successful Learners!”  Our Family Nights, Accelerated Reader events, and Positive Behavior Support events will all celebrate our school-wide theme this year!

Speaking of Accelerated Reader, our students will begin the school year right away taking the STAR test.  Teachers will assess reading levels and assign individual goals to our students.  The overall goal is to increase their reading levels and enjoyment of reading at the same time!  This program is research-based, and Honey Island students have always enjoyed great reading success with this program.  You can get more information on Accelerated Reader from our website and your child’s teacher.  Remember, you are an important part in determining your child’s success in school as well as in reading!  Please encourage your child to read, read, read! Remember “practice makes perfect!” 

We will once again focus on “Positive Behavior Support - PBS” here at Honey Island.  Our school-wide expectations are based on the FISH Philosophy – We want students to “Be There,” “Make Their Day,” “Choose Their Attitude,” and “Have Fun!”  There are many incentives in place to encourage students to follow these expectations, including Champos, Buzz Bucks, and Good News Calls.  In another phase of our Positive Behavior Support, we will focus on helping students to develop positive character traits. Teachers will create weekly lessons on character traits such as honesty, integrity, and perseverance.  We are excited about this new phase of PBS!

I am excited about seeing our new and returning students here at Honey Island on August 9th!  It will be fun this year to celebrate a “Sea of Successful Learners!”
