HONEY ISLAND, WHERE EVERYDAY, EVERY CHILD SUCCEEDS
Dear Honey Island Elementary Families,
Hi Honey Island community! My name is Gina Ward, and I am the new Assistant Principal of Honey Island Elementary. I am very excited to have joined such a great learning community! It has been exciting for me to get involved with the teachers, students, and parents of Honey Island! Everyone has been so welcoming. I’d like to let you know that if I can help you in any way, I am here for the students and parents of this wonderful school!
I’d like to take some time to talk to you about a new program we have started here called “Power Hour.” This idea was developed last year by Honey Island’s leadership team. Every week, each teacher articulation team meets for one hour to discuss ideas and activities which will help Honey Island meet the needs of our students. While the teachers are collaborating, the administrative team works with the students. We take this “Power Hour” time very seriously, and work hard on planning research-based learning strategies to share with the students. In the first three weeks of “Power Hour,” students have shared morning meeting messages, developed teamwork and partner strategies, practiced the Thinking Maps they have learned in class, developed reading comprehension strategies utilizing a “go-chart,” and practiced our CHAMPS expectations, FISH Philosophies, and Safe School strategies.
It is part of our plan to showcase student ideas on our website that are created during “Power Hour.” A “Power Hour” link will be placed on the website for you to view. You may also want to ask your child about “Power Hour” and have them show you our special “Power Hour Cheer!” We are looking forward to many great “Power Hour” lessons with your children during this school year.
Gina Ward
